The Visual Sarcasm
In formal writing, a strikethrough means "delete this." It means an error was made. But on the internet, strikethrough has evolved into a sophisticated tool for comedy. It represents the "quiet part loud." It’s the thought you had, realized you shouldn't say, but decided to say anyway.
Example: "I am so excited to go to my cousin's wedding ~~and see my ex~~."
That line through the text changes everything. It adds a layer of vulnerability and humor that plain text simply cannot convey. It’s a glimpse into the writer's unfiltered consciousness.
Timing is Everything
The strikethrough joke works best at the end of a sentence. It’s the punchline. You build up a normal, polite statement, and then you undercut it with the crossed-out truth. It mimics the timing of a stand-up comic muttering something under their breath.
It’s also great for self-correction humor. "I plan to be very productive today and finish three articles ~~watch Netflix for 6 hours~~." It makes you relatable. It shows you are human.
Technical Execution
On platforms like Slack, Discord, or GitHub, you can usually trigger strikethrough with tilde keys (~~like this~~). But on Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok, markdown doesn't work. You are stuck with plain text.
This is where a strikethrough generator becomes essential. It takes your text and overlays a "combining long stroke overlay" character on each letter. To the computer, it’s just a bunch of weird symbols. To the human eye, it’s a perfect line through the text. You can copy-paste that result into your bio or tweet and the joke lands perfectly.
Don't Confuse the Bot
A quick warning: if you are using strikethrough to hide keywords or bypass moderation filters, it usually doesn't work. Algorithms are smart enough to ignore the strikethrough line and read the letters underneath. So don't use it to post prohibited content thinking you are being sneaky. Use it for the laughs, not the hacks.
